Traditional Irish construction consisted of stone jointed with lime mortar and lime plaster internal. This proved a very successful method of construction. The breathable nature of the external lime allows any damp ingress to evaporate through the wall. Damp in stone walls come mainly from two sources, rising damp from ground or penetration of rainwater.
Some old buildings have been plastered with impermeable hard mortars which do not allow rubble stone walls to breath. Over time this will hold all rising damp within the walls causing internal dampness.
There is growing recognition of the advantages of lime as a plaster or pointing material. Over the past few years we have carried out a lot of projects involving the removal of impermeable material, cement mortar, and replacing with lime. This process has proved very successful in reducing dampness in the buildings.
